Two reasons, and only one of them is commercial. The honest one: on a curved staircase the rail is manufactured to your geometry, so there is no such thing as a list price — the number genuinely does not exist until someone has measured your stairs. The commercial one: a quoted price is easier to flex when the customer is in the room, which is why the survey is free and the figure arrives at the end of it.
For a straight staircase, none of that applies. A straight lift is a stock rail cut to length. If a supplier will not give you a straight-stairs figure over the phone from the number of steps, that is a choice, not a technical limitation.
What the premium buys — and when it is worth it
Stannah is typically the most expensive of the big three. Some of that is real and some is overhead.
Real: the service network
A large national engineer network with genuine coverage, including places where independents are thin on the ground. If you are rural, this is worth something concrete.
Real: parts longevity
Stannah lifts stay serviceable for a long time and parts remain available. That matters if you intend to keep the lift for fifteen years, and it protects the resale value.
Overhead: marketing and sales
Extensive advertising and a large sales operation are paid for by customers. That is not a criticism, it is arithmetic, and it is a large part of the gap to a smaller maker.
Worth comparing against
Acorn is usually cheaper for a similar straight installation, and a reconditioned Stannah gives you the same engineering for a fraction of the price.

Why won't Stannah give me a price on the phone?
On a curved staircase there genuinely is no list price, because the rail is manufactured to your geometry and has to be measured first. On a straight staircase that reasoning does not apply — a straight rail is a stock item cut to length, so a phone figure from the number of steps is perfectly possible if a supplier chooses to give one.
Is Stannah worth the extra over cheaper makes?
It depends where you live and how long you plan to keep it. The service network and long parts availability are real, and they matter most if you are rural or intend to keep the lift fifteen years. If you are in a city with plenty of independent engineers and want the cheapest safe option, a reconditioned lift or another make will do the job.
Can I buy a reconditioned Stannah?
Yes, and it is one of the better value options in the market — the same engineering at a fraction of new. Straight reconditioned Stannah lifts are widely available. Reconditioned curved is much rarer, because the rail was bent for somebody else's staircase.
Does an independent engineer service Stannah lifts?
Yes, once the warranty has expired, and usually more cheaply. While the lift is still in warranty use Stannah, because you have already paid for that cover.
How much is a used Stannah stairlift worth?
A working straight Stannah typically fetches £250 to £600 from a reconditioner. A curved one is worth far less because the rail cannot be reused, though the carriage and seat have value as spares.
